The Rule of Thirds
Know your creative sweet spots
The world of art has a lot of ‘rules’ rules for typography, balance, composition, white space, negative space and pretty much everything that you can think of.
But for now, let’s just talk about the rule of thirds and how do you apply this rule in your designs.
What is the rule of thirds??
To put it very simply – Imagine splitting your canvas into 3 equal parts, vertically and horizontally spread equally apart. Or a 3×3 grid.
If you have been following art for a while, you should be familiar with the importance of balance, composition and negative space (say no to ‘make the logo bigger’) in your design.
The rule of thirds will help you in creating art that’s balanced and composed, yet visually appealing.
Having said that, it is not a had and fast rule. you don’t have to align all your elements to one side. Go crazy 🙂
Choosing where to focus:
Now that we have understood what the ‘rule’ of thirds actually means, now lets figure where to focus – or where to place your subject. that one thing you would really like your viewer to pay attention to. Usually on the top left (or just on the left).
Now let’s figure out where to place the rest of the elements or complimenting elements.
For example, you can place your call to action or your product in the sweet spot.
Below is a representation of how our eyes automatically fall towards the intersection of these points.
End of the day, art is all about being creative. There are a lot of ways to make your art interesting and communicate your key message. Using the rule of thirds is just another tool in your toolbox, it’s not the holy grail of art and design, but an alternative to the traditional way of aligning the subject in the centre of your frame.
Trust your instincts, don’t be afraid to wild.
